This month’s community spotlight is Beya from Las Vegas, Nevada! Beya recently received a grant for a sports chair to play football.

Beya has always been active and loved playing catch with her older cousin when she was younger. She first started adaptive sports about three years after her injury. She tried rugby but basketball and football were the wheelchair sports that stuck with her. “When I was introduced to football,” she describes, “I instantly connected with the sense of freedom I felt moving in a sports chair.”

For Beya, wheelchair football has given her the opportunity to work up a sweat. The sport also provides her the opportunity to work on her wheelchair skills. “Finding adaptive sports satisfies my crave for movement and challenge,” she says. Figuring out how to maneuver in her new sports chair has been a fun challenge as well.

Playing adaptive sports reignited my passion for movement,” she says. “Wheelchair football gives me something to look forward to every week and helps me maintain a balanced life.”

Next up, Beya plans to take her wheelchair football skills to the next level and improve her skills as the team’s defensive end. She also hopes to travel with the team, compete in tournaments, and progress and evolve as a team.

When Beya is not playing football and basketball, you can find her hanging out with friends, going out to eat, and hosting game nights. Above everything else, though, Beya can be found at home with her 13-year-old Maltese, Barney.
