Five patients who previously attended Shepherd Center for inpatient rehabilitation, accompanied by a loved one, joined the Adaptive Sports Center (ASC) for a 5-day trip filled with adventure, fun, and endless laughter. Most of the group traveled from Atlanta, North Carolina, or Tennessee as the ASC team welcomed us with open arms and transported us to their lodge nestled in the mountains of Crested Butte.
We kicked off our adventure at Lake Irwin, taking in breathtaking views. The ASC crew had set up a peaceful lakeside spot stocked with paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes. After an icebreaker, the group was successfully on the water in minutes. Everyone was eager to try new equipment and challenge themselves. Surrounded by stunning 360-degree views, the atmosphere was nothing short of magical. The day was filled with laughter, shared riddles, and a growing sense of community. As the incredible day carried on, we made our way down a dirt road, soaking in the stunning views. That evening, we enjoyed live music at the final Alpenglow Music Series of the season. The community vibe, music, and mountain backdrop made for a relaxing night. It was a perfect way to end the day.
The next day brought new excitement: mountain biking. We started at the local pump track and quickly moved onto nearby trails. Although most participants were new to biking, the ASC instructors offered one-on-one support, building confidence and skills quickly. As the day’s activities continued, the group grew stronger and more enthusiastic. The trails were challenging, filled with rocks and roots, but every rider crushed the challenge and stepped out of their comfort zone. That evening, we had a team dinner in town with the ASC staff – It was a night full of laughter and stories to round off the day.
Our final day of biking took us up the mountains. Guided by the ASC crew, riders took the chairlift up and tested their limits on scenic downhill terrain through beautiful aspen forests. Though it was physically demanding, the smiles only grew as riders embraced the challenge. The support and patience from the ASC team made all the difference.
This crew was up for anything; the ASC team created the perfect environment for each athlete to thrive. The fully accessible lodge was conveniently located near stores, activities, local transportation, and breathtaking scenery. The ASC staff provided unwavering support and the encouragement needed to allow individuals to step into new experiences.
This trip gave our participants the chance to rediscover adventure and the joy of sport. It reminded everyone that life is full of possibilities and that with the right support, anything you can dream of, you can achieve. This week left a lasting impact not only on the clients but also on their families, staff, and all the incredible ASC instructors.
